 Article 1 (Purpose)
The purpose of this Act is to contribute to the development of arts by establishing the National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea to treat favorably and support artists who have rendered meritorious services in artistic creation and to carry out projects assisting their artistic creative activities.

 Article 2 (Functions)
The National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as "National Academy of Arts") shall be a representative organ of artists at home and abroad, and shall carry out the following affairs necessary for the development of arts:
1. Consultation and suggestion on policies for the promotion of arts;
2. Support for artistic creative activities;
3. Exchange of domestic and foreign arts and the holding of artistic events;
4. Award of the National Academy of Arts Prize; and
5. Other matters concerning the promotion of arts.

 Article 3 (Organization)
(1) The National Academy of Arts shall be composed of members of the National Academy of Arts (hereinafter referred to as the "members").
(2) The fixed number of members shall be one hundred.
(3) The National Academy of Arts shall establish subdivisions by specialized fields, and members shall be assigned to a subdivision according to their major fields.

 Article 4 (Qualification for Members)
A member shall be a citizen of the Republic of Korea having a career of 30 years or more in art who has rendered remarkable services for the development of art.

 Article 5 (Election of Members)
(1) Members shall be elected by a resolution of the general meeting through the screening of the Member Screening Committee from among those who are recommended by members or art organizations in related fields as designated by the National Academy of Arts.
(2) Matters necessary for the composition, etc. of the Member Screening Committee shall be determined by the general meeting.

 Article 6 (Term, etc. of Members)
(1) The term of members shall be four years, but members may be reappointed.
(2) Members shall serve part-time.

 Article 7 (Treatment of Members)
(1) The State shall treat members favorably and take the necessary measures for utilizing their expertise and experience.
(2) Members shall be paid allowances or pensions under the conditions as prescribed by Presidential Decree.

 Article 8 (Election, etc. of President and Vice-President)
(1) The National Academy of Arts shall have a president and a vice-president.
(2) The president and the vice-president shall be elected by the general meeting.
(3) The term of the president and the vice-president shall be two years, and they may be reappointed for only one further term of two years.

 Article 9 (Duties of President and Vice-President)
(1) The president shall take charge of affairs of the National Academy of Arts and represent the said Academy.
(2) The vice-president shall assist the president, and if the president is unable to perform his/her duties due to inevitable reasons, the vice-president shall act on behalf of the president.

 Article 10 (Chief of Subdivision)
(1) Each subdivision shall have a chief of subdivision, and each chief shall be elected from among members of the subdivision concerned.
(2) The term of the chief of subdivision shall be one year, but he/she may be reappointed.
(3) The chief of subdivision shall manage affairs of the subdivision to which he/she belongs.

 Article 11 (Meetings)
(1) The meetings of the National Academy of Arts shall be divided into a general meeting and subdivision meetings.
(2) A general meeting shall be the highest deliberative body of the National Academy of Arts, and if the president deems it necessary, or a third or more of members demand it, the general meeting shall be convened by the president.
(3) Subdivision meetings shall, if necessary, be convened by the chief of subdivision.
(4) The resolution of meetings shall be made by attendance of a majority of all members and with concurrent vote of a majority of members present.

 Article 12 (Support of Artistic Creative Activities)
The State may pay a bounty, subsidy or monetary reward to artists or art organizations for their meritorious service of making efforts to promote artistic creative activities, following recommendation by the National Academy of Arts.

 Article 13 (Award of Prize)
The National Academy of Arts may award the National Academy of Arts Prize to a person who has rendered meritorious service by completing excellent creative activities with respect to arts.

 Article 14 (Charge of Expenses)
Expenses necessary for the enforcement of this Act shall be borne by the State.

 Article 15 (Support)
The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism shall support activities of the National Academy of Arts.

 Article 16 (Secretariat)
(1) The National Academy of Arts shall have a Secretariat.
(2) The organization and fixed number of personnel of the Secretariat shall be prescribed by Presidential Decree.

 Article 17 (Detailed Rules of Operation)
The detailed matters necessary for the operation of the National Academy of Arts shall be determined by the general meeting.

ADDENDA
(1) (Enforcement Date) This Act shall enter into force on January 1, 1989.
(2) (Transitional Measures concerning National Academy of Arts) The National Academy of Arts under the previous Protection of Cultural Properties Act at the time of the enforcement of this Act shall be considered as the National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea under this Act.
(3) (Transitional Measures concerning Regular Members) Regular members of the National Academy of Arts, who were appointed under the previous Protection of Cultural Properties Act at the time of the enforcement of this Act, shall be considered to have been elected as members under this Act, but their term shall be counted from the date on which they were appointed under the previous Protection of Cultural Properties Act.
(4) (Transitional Measures concerning Senior Members) The senior members of the National Academy of Arts, who were appointed under the previous Protection of Cultural Properties Act at the time of the enforcement of this Act, shall be considered to have been elected as members under this Act, but they shall be excluded from the fixed number of members as provided in Article 3 (2), and notwithstanding the provision of Article 6 (1), their term shall be for life.
