 Article 1 (Purpose)
The purpose of this Act is to establish the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea so as to treat favorably and support scientists who have made remarkable contributions to the development of sciences, and to carry out scientific research and supporting projects, and thus contribute to the development of sciences.

 Article 2 (Function)
The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as the "National Academy of Sciences") shall be a representative organ of scientists at home and abroad, and shall carry out the following matters necessary for the development of sciences:
1. Consultations on policies for the promotion of sciences and proposals for the promotion of sciences;
2. Scientific research and support therefor;
3. Domestic and international academic exchanges and holding of academic events;
4. Conferment of the National Academy of Sciences Awards;
5. Other matters concerning the promotion of sciences.

 Article 3 (Organization)
(1) The National Academy of Sciences shall be composed of the members of the National Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "members").
(2) The fixed number of members shall be 150.
(3) The National Academy of Sciences shall establish the humanities and social sciences division and the natural sciences division, and each division shall have sections for specialized fields of studies.
(4) Each member shall belong to one of the sections depending on his/her majors of study.

 Article 4 (Qualifications of Members)
A Member shall be a citizen of the Republic of Korea falling under any of the following:
1. A person who had graduated from any of the schools referred to in Article 2 of the Higher Education Act or from an equivalent or higher level school, and has had a career of at least 20 years in scientific research and made a remarkable contribution to the development of sciences;
2. A person has had a career of at least 30 years in scientific research and made a remarkable contribution to the development of sciences.

 Article 4-2 (Grounds for Disqualification of Members)
(1) A person who falls under any of the subparagraphs of Article 33 of the State Public Officials Act shall not become a member.
(2) Where a member comes to fall under paragraph (1) or is found to have fallen under the same paragraph as at the time he/she is elected, he/she shall ex officio lose his/her status as a member.
(3) A person who damages his/her honor and dignity as a member may be deprived of his/her status as a member in compliance with a resolution adopted by a general meeting.

 Article 5 (Election of Members)
(1) A member shall be a person who is, from among those recommended by the members or by academic organizations in the relevant fields which are designated by the National Academy of Science, decided upon at a meeting of the relevant division after a candidate screening by the member screening committee and then approved by a general meeting.
(2) Matters necessary for the composition, etc. of the member screening committee shall be determined by a general meeting.

 Article 6 (Term, etc. of Membership)
(1) The term of membership shall be lifetime.
(2) The members shall serve part-time.

 Article 7 (Treatment of Members)
(1) The State shall treat the members favorably and take the necessary measures for putting their knowledge and experience to practical use.
(2) The members shall be paid allowances or pensions as prescribed by the Presidential Decree.

 Article 8 (Election, etc. of President and Vice-President)
(1) The National Academy of Sciences shall have a president and a vice- president.
(2) The president and the vice-president shall be elected at a general meeting.
(3) The terms of office of the president and the vice-president shall be two years, and each term of office shall be renewable only once.

 Article 9 (Duties of President and Vice-President)
(1) The president shall take charge of the affairs of the National Academy of Sciences and represent the said Academy.
(2) The vice-president shall assist the president, and if the president is unable to perform his duties for an unavoidable reason, the vice-president shall act for the president.

 Article 10 (Director of Each Division)
(1) Each division shall have a director of division under Article 3 (3), who shall be elected by and from among members of the division concerned.
(2) The term of office of the director of division shall be one year and renewable.
(3) The director of division shall manage the affairs of the division under his/her control.

 Article 11 (Chief of Section)
(1) Each of the sections referred to in Article 3 (3) shall have a chief of section who shall be elected by and from among members of the section concerned.
(2) The term of office of the chief of section shall be one year and renewable.
(3) The chief of section shall manage affairs of the section under his control.

 Article 12 (Meetings)
(1) The meetings of the National Academy of Sciences shall be categorized into a general meeting, division meetings, and section meetings.
(2) A general meeting shall be the highest deliberative organ of the National Academy of Sciences, and if the president deems it necessary, or upon a request of at least one third of the members, the president shall convene it.
(3) Division or section meetings shall, if necessary, be convened by the director of a division provided for in Article 10 or the chief of a section provided for in Article 11.
(4) The meetings of the National Academy of Sciences shall adopt resolutions by attendance of a majority of all members and with the concurrent vote of a majority of members present.

 Article 12-2 (Honorary Members)
(1) Foreigners with outstanding academic achievements may be appointed as honorary members of the National Academy of Sciences for the purpose of promoting academic exchanges and collaborations with foreign countries.
(2) Matters necessary for the number, qualifications, membership term, appointment method, allowances, etc. of honorary members shall be prescribed by the Presidential Decree.

 Article 13 (Support for Academic Activities)
The State may pay a bounty, subsidy, or monetary reward to scientists or academic organizations committed to their studies upon a proposal of the National Academy of Sciences.

 Article 14 (Conferment of Awards)
The National Academy of Sciences may confer the National Academy of Sciences Award to a person who has made a remarkable contribution to scientific studies with his/her outstanding research.

 Article 15 (Admission to International Science Organizations)
The National Academy of Sciences may be admitted to an International Science Organization.

 Article 16 (Bearing of Expenses)
Expenses needed for the enforcement of this Act shall be borne by the State.

 Article 17 (Support)
The Minister of Education shall support activities of the National Academy of Sciences. <Amended by Act No. 11690, Mar. 23. 2013>

 Article 18 (Secretariat)
(1) The National Academy of Sciences shall have a Secretariat.
(2) The organization and fixed number of personnel of the Secretariat shall be prescribed by the Presidential Decree.

 Article 19 (Detailed Rules of Operation)
The detailed matters necessary for the operation of the National Academy of Sciences shall be determined by a general meeting.

ADDENDA
(1) (Enforcement Date) This Act shall enter into force on January 1, 1989.
(2) (Repeal of Acts) The Culture Protection Act shall hereby be repealed.
(3) (Transitional Measures concerning the National Academy of Sciences) The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea under the previous Culture Protection Act as at the time this Act enters into force, shall be deemed the National Academy of Sciences under this Act.
(4) (Transitional Measures concerning Regular Members) Regular members of the National Academy of Sciences who were appointed under the previous Culture Protection Act as at the time this Act enters into force, shall be deemed elected as members under this Act, but their terms of membership shall be counted from the date on which they were appointed under the previous Culture Protection Act.
(5) (Transitional Measures concerning Senior Members) Senior members of the National Academy of Sciences who were installed under the previous Culture Protection Act as at the time this Act enters into force, shall be deemed elected as members under this Act, but they shall be excluded from the fixed number of members as prescribed in Article 3 (2), and their terms of membership shall be lifetime notwithstanding Article 6 (1).

(2) (Applicability to Terms of Membership) The amended provisions of Article 6 (1) shall be applied as well to the members who were elected in accordance with the previous provisions as at the time when this Act enters into force.
