Not everyone in Korea needs to be aware of, but each must abide by Korean laws.
At the Korea Legislation Research Institute that is a government-funded research institute, professional legal translators are introducing Korean laws translated into English to the world.
We are the Center for Legal Translation at the Korea Legislation Research Institute.
Since 1990, the Center for Legal Translation or CLT has continuously endeavored to ensure accuracy and consistency in translation.
The CLT has been providing translation of around 1,600 Korean statutes including the Constitution.
The ELMS, a solution enabling cross-checking and a six-stage process involving translation, revision, and native speakers’ editing, has elevated the CLT’s quality of translation to a higher level.
In order to improve the quality of translation, we are providing on-the-job training to our translators, and holding Legal Translation Advisory Council meetings and forums with legal translators on a regular basis.
As Korea’s only organization specialized in translation of Korean statutes, the CLT has been recognized for its high quality translation and unwavering dedication to quality improvement.
In 2010, the CLT built its website, which compiles English translations of the statutes of the Republic of Korea and makes it freely available, allowing anyone in the world easy access to Korean statutes.
In addition, in line with the Government 3.0 plan adopted by the Korean Government to make public data freely accessible, the KLRI has launched Openlaw.KLRI.re.kr to provide government agencies home and abroad, including the Korea Ministry of Government Legislation, with its database of Korean statutes in English, by using an Open API—an application programming interface.
On the back of its English version of Korean statutes, the CLT is contributing to fostering Korea’s international exchanges and foreign investment.
We are now cooperating with the European Commission DG Translation, one of the largest translation services around the globe. The CLT is endeavoring to advance its translation service of Korean statutes to join the ranks of top-class translation providers.
By establishing a sustainable, advanced translation system, we will grow into the ‘National Legal Translation Center.’
We will promote a global awareness of Korean laws through accurate and consistent translation, thus enabling foreigners without knowledge of Korean laws to easily understand them.
Highly credible and reliable,
KLRI’s Center for Legal Translation.
